UFC superstar Conor McGregor tweets that he is thinking about BUYING Manchester United | Daily Mail Online

Conor McGregor has cheekily weighed in on the European Super League fallout by tweeting that he is considering buying Manchester United following their controversial bid to form a breakaway league.

The Red Devils were one of 12 clubs to pledge their support for the £4.6bn scheme, described as a ‘close shop’ by critics amid fears that it would change the football landscape forever.

However, on Tuesday evening the plan begun to unravel with all six Premier League clubs involved announcing their intention to withdraw from the competition,  while United announced that chief executive Ed Woodward will leave his role at the end of 2021.

And UFC star McGregor, who was a boyhood United fan, took to Twitter to ask fans for their view on his hastily conceived plan to buy the Old Trafford outfit.

United fans want the Glazer family out amid their role in the controversial £4.6bn scheme

‘Hey guys, I’m thinking about buying Manchester United! What do you think?’ he wrote to his 8.6m followers on the platform.

The Irishman, who raked in roughly £90m from his mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather in 2017, would represent a welcome change of ownerhship among United fans, who are demanding that the Glazer family sell up in the wake of the Super League plot – though he may have some way to go on the financial front.

The American owners, alongside countrymen Stan Kroenke and John W Henry of Arsenal and Liverpool respectively, are thought to have been driving forces behind the competition, as well as Florentino Perez of Real Madrid.

The UFC superstar has previously revealed his admiration for the Red Devils as a youngster

McGregor previously revealed that United’s history of success, as well as ties with Irish stars such as Roy Keane and Dennis Irwin, attracted him to the club as a youngster.

‘I was attracted to the success and winning mentality of the club and people surrounded by United. Irish legends like Denis Irwin and Roy Keane were dedicated to their craft and had that winning mentality.

‘Roy Keane was one of the best midfielders European football has ever seen. Opponents would be mentally beaten before they’d even stepped on to the pitch to face him.’

McGregor also described legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson as ‘the don of football’.

‘Then they had the don of football at the helm, the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson. To have that much success over such a long period is remarkable and something I continue to aspire to.

‘And he did it by nurturing youngsters into stars and not by spending and spending and spending like some of these other managers. It’s been great to see Sir Alex getting back to full health and continuing to be at the United games. What passion! I wish him and his family all the best.’
