Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin ‘studies’ Man United star Cristiano Ronaldo | Daily Mail Online

Injured Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin revealed he has been paying close attention to five time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo in order to improve his own performance.

Calvert-Lewin has already proved himself to be one of the Premier League’s most dangerous players in the box after scoring 21 goals for Everton last season, but has been absent from the club’s last eight outings after fracturing his toe at the start of September.

And the forward shared how he is using his time away from the pitch to analyse Ronaldo’s attacking approach, reflecting on the stunning volley Ronaldo scored to kick-start Manchester United’s 3-0 victory over a troublesome Tottenham.

‘As a centre-forward, I love to see it. I’ve studied him and (he is) someone I’ve always looked at,’ Calvert-Lewin said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football

‘How has he got himself in these positions. You spend a lot of time watching players in front of you.’

Since returning to Manchester United at the end of the summer transfer window, Ronaldo has been on the spectacular form that fans have become so accustomed to— scoring seven goals in 10 games, which has earned him respect and admiration from Calvert-Lewin.

‘He’s the best player in the world and it’s due to his work rate and his willingness to keep scoring goals,’ he added.

‘You might appear at the right place at the right time but you’ve got to ask yourself how did you get there.’

The Sheffield-born forward hailed Ronaldo’s speedy decision making and agility as the key components that ensured United got off to a good start, he said: ‘I think with the goal that Ronaldo scored it’s a one vs one battle with the defender.

‘It’s fantastic technique but he’s won the battle as soon as he’s gotten on the wrong side of Ben Davies.

‘It’s an art and a craft, and he gets himself into positions which can’t be considered a coincidence.’

After an impressive start to the 2020-21 season where Calvert-Lewin scored eight goals in just five appearances for Everton, Calvert-Lewin received his first England call-up from Gareth Southgate in October of last year and scored in his first match.

Watching on as Everton lost 2-1 to Wolves on Monday night, Calvert-Lewin admitted that he has found it ‘frustrating’ and that he has felt ‘helpless’ sitting on the sidelines, unable to curtail his side’s course to their third successive game without a win.

A return to being match fit is some way off for Calvert-Lewin after picking up a quadriceps injury, but his intention to keep learning and continue his development away from the pitch will surely serve him well when he makes his comeback for the Toffees.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who on Thursday took to Instagram to share the news that him and long-term girlfriend, Georgina Rodriguez, are expecting twins, will be back in action for the Red Devils tonight when United face Atalanta in the Champions League group stages.

The Portugal star has scored three goals in three in Europe so far, and Calvert-Lewin might not have long to wait for another Ronaldo screamer to analyse.
